Ugliest Dog

Ugliest Dog

Last month, a 7-year-old nearly bald Chinese Crested dog, with reversed hind legs was celebrated as the “World’s Ugliest Dog” at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. The nearly 50-year-old event is held to show that these dogs are uniquely beautiful by celebrating "the imperfections that make all dogs special," and to advocate for adoption.

“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty”

-1 Corinthians 1:27

Just like these "ugly" dogs, we often hide our flaws to seek approval. But, as part of God’s redemptive plan, we can use our flaws to demonstrate His power. Paul was able to adopt this mindset, and become one of the most effective servants for God’s Kingdom.

“Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

-2 Corinthains 12:9-10

At the contest, judges focus on the dogs' special traits, not conventional beauty. Similarly, God looks at our hearts, not outward appearance (1 Samuel 16:7). He values a loving spirit and a compassionate soul.

Recognizing our imperfections shows our need for God's grace. He sees worth in us, broken or not. True beauty lies in authenticity and humility. Let us open our hearts to others, celebrating their uniqueness. By doing so, we reflect God's love in this world.

May we see beyond appearances and embrace our own brokenness to be beacons of love, acceptance, and compassion.

I Love You,
