TRUST IN UNCERTAINTY
Trust in Uncertainty
Typically, people tend to avoid situations that make them uncomfortable, and understandably so. However, discomfort is often unavoidable, and Scripture reminds us that we must be prepared to face such circumstances with faith. Throughout the Bible, we see clear examples of individuals who trusted in the Lord during uncertain and distressing times, and in doing so, experienced His provision and faithfulness.
Joseph provides a powerful example of unwavering trust in God. After being sold into slavery by his own brothers, Joseph placed his trust in the only One he knew would remain faithful: the Lord. Scripture tells us, “His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand” (Genesis 39:3–4). Because of this, Joseph became a trusted servant. Even later, when he was unjustly imprisoned, “the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison” (Genesis 39:21). Despite betrayal, injustice, and fear, Joseph remained faithful, and the Lord continually provided for him.
A similar example can be found during the Babylonian captivity of Israel. Removed from their homeland and exposed to foreign customs and pressures, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah chose to remain obedient to God. By refusing to defile themselves with food forbidden by God’s law, they demonstrated their trust in Him. As a result, “God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom” (Daniel 1:17), and the king found them “ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers” in his kingdom (Daniel 1:20). Their faithfulness in an uncomfortable and uncertain situation was met with God’s blessing and favor.
In the New Testament, we see another powerful illustration of trust when Jesus walks on the water toward His disciples. Faced with something entirely unfamiliar and frightening, Peter placed his faith in Christ and stepped out of the boat. Jesus said, “Come,” and Peter walked on the water toward Him (Matthew 14:28–29). However, when Peter allowed fear and distraction to overtake his trust, he began to sink. This moment serves as a reminder that faith requires focus: when our attention shifts from the Lord to our circumstances, fear can quickly take over.
None of these lessons are new, but they are important. This writing serves as a reminder that trusting in the Lord is not always easy, especially during moments of fear, uncertainty, or discomfort. Yet Scripture consistently shows that God is faithful to those who place their trust in Him. Even when we do not understand our circumstances, we can be confident that the Lord is present, working, and providing. Therefore, in every situation, we must ask ourselves: Is our trust in God or in something else?
