GATHERING WITH GLADNESS

Gathering with Gladness: Strengthening Our Fellowship

As we continue to focus on the importance of preparing our hearts for worship, let us consider the great blessings and responsibilities that come with assembling together as the body of Christ. Just as we mentioned last Sunday, our time together in worship is far more than a mere ritual. It isn’t just some religious tradition; it is a time for spiritual growth, mutual encouragement, and outreach. We are called to unity and fellowship, a term that speaks of a deep connection, a shared life, and a common purpose found in our relationship with God and with each other.

Perhaps, we should begin by asking, why do we gather? Well, we do so to stir one another to love and good works. Hebrews 10:24-25 provides a clear directive: "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." We are called to be intentional in our encouragement, challenging each other to grow in faith and to serve in love. Let us heed the call of Galatians 6:10, "As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."

We also gather to find strength in unity. The early church serves as our model for living in harmony with God and each other. Acts 2:42-47 describes the unwavering dedication of those first believers: "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." They found strength in their shared faith, in their prayers, and in the fellowship that bound them together. Consider also the words of the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:27, when he said, ”Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular." We are connected, and we draw strength from each other.

Finally, one thing that I am afraid that many of my brethren have forgotten is that we gather to make a difference. A united congregation, filled with joy and purpose, is a powerful testament of God’s goodness to the world. Our faithful attendance, heartfelt worship, and acts of service magnify the impact of the Gospel in the hearts and minds of those we serve. Remember the words of Philippians 2:2, "Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind." Let us strive for this unity, so that we may be a clear and compelling proof of Christ’s love, and that they may know we are the disciples of Jesus Christ if we love one another (John 13:34-35).

How can we participate? Be present. Make a conscious effort to attend services and activities regularly. Be encouraging. Offer words of support and encouragement to fellow believers. Be involved. Participate in ministries and activities to serve others and build up the church. Be welcoming. Extend a warm welcome to visitors and make them feel like part of the family.

Let us come together with gladness, ready to learn, encourage, and serve. And, may our gatherings be a source of joy, strength, and growth for each of us and a beacon of hope for those around us.
