Singing Praises

Singing Praises

When we come together to worship the Lord singing hymns makes up a large portion of this time. In Ephesians 5:19 we are commanded to worship our Lord in songs (addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart). However, it is in these hymns that we often find ourselves slacking off. We are commanded to make melody with our hearts but often times we can forget why we are singing and simply go through the motions. It’s easy to just sit there and let the words simply pass from our lips without any consideration of what we are singing. However, it is not just something that sounds nice, it’s worship and should be treated as such. When we sing we should consider the words we are singing and not let them pass from us thoughtlessly. When we pray we do so actively and it should be the same with our hymns. We are singing to the Lord and we should do so actively and with reverence. “Some glad morning when this life is or’ I’ll fly away” when we sing this verse do we truly mean we intend to reach heaven or are the words simply tumbling from our mouths as our minds wander elsewhere. “There is beyond the azure blue a God concealed from human sight”. When we sing lyrics like these we should mean them. When we sing we should do so with both our hearts and our voices.
